5 Nutrition Secrets for Flat Abs

April 04, 20234 min read

As much as I love exercise, exercise alone will not get you a flat and lean stomach.

Your diet is a huge part of the equation. Perhaps you've heard the expression "Arms are made in the gym. Abs are made in the kitchen."

Someone could work out all day long, but then eat in a way that promotes major fat storage, and they wouldn’t have a toned or flat tummy.

While your diet is probably already pretty good, the 5 secrets below will help you improve it even more. And a better diet means flatter and leaner abs.

Secret #1: Avoid Eating Late

This is the most simple and effective way to decrease caloric intake and body fat. You can start with eating less food late at night, and eventually completely avoid eating after dinner.

Try these tips…

  • Brush your teeth right after dinner. Once your teeth are clean, you’ve put an end to your consumption for the day.

  • Change things up. If your evening routine revolves around food, then find a new routine. Maybe a walk or a gentle stretching routine with relaxing music.

  • Enjoy a calorie free beverage like herbal tea or sparkling water.

  • Let the habit form. The first few weeks might be tough, but soon your new "Stop Eating After Dinner" routine will feel normal.

Secret #2: Drink more water

Drinking lots of water is another extremely simple way to promote fat loss. Chronic dehydration triggers false hunger signals that causes you to eat extra, empty calories. Try these tips…

  • Drink a big glass of water before each meal. This will make you less likely to overeat.

  • Replace sugar-filled sodas, coffee drinks and juices with water. This tip alone can make a huge difference in your body.

  • Carry water with you throughout the day and consume often.

Secret #3: Load up on fiber

Most of us do not get enough fiber in our diet. This is important, since fiber is essential when it comes to being healthy and getting leaner. Fiber-filled foods are naturally low in calories and are filling, so you’ll be eating more bulk but less calories. Try these tips…

  • Turn salads into meals. Add a serving of lean protein to a large pile of greens and veggies for a filling and healthy meal.

  • Include vegetables in almost every meal. The benefits to eating more veggies are too many to list, so just know that your body will become healthier and leaner with each fibrous bite.

  • Fruits are a tasty and sweet source of fiber. Eat a piece of fresh, seasonal fruit for dessert when you want something sweet.

Secret #4: Eat fewer starchy carbs

Now, I didn’t say to cut out all carbs, but rather to eat fewer carbs. These secrets are meant as lifestyle changes for you to stick with long term. Eating fewer carbs is a realistic and very effective way to flatten your tummy. Try these tips…

  • Choose whole grains and beans instead of "white flour" bread/snacks/pasta. Whole grains are higher in fiber. That being said, you may want to limit the amount that you eat since it's easy to over consume these foods.

  • Eat half of the starchy carbs you were eating: Make your sandwich open-faced and cut down the size of your (whole grain) pasta serving while increasing the veggies and protein.

  • Switch out carb-filled snacks: Instead of crackers or chips, have a hard boiled egg, a small protein shake, a piece of fresh fruit with cottage cheese, or veggies and hummus.

Secret #5: Enjoy Wholesome Sweets

Refined sugar-filled sweets will quickly add up around your waistline. Learn to enjoy natural sweets. Try these tips…

  • Fruit is Mother Nature's candy. When you stop eating refined sugar, you’ll find fresh fruit to be more sweet and more delicious than ever. Choose organic fruit in season whenever possible.

  • Avoid foods that contain high fructose corn syrup.

  • Avoid adding sweetness to your foods if possible. But, if you "must", try wholesome sweeteners, like a small amount of pure maple syrup, raw honey, organic coconut sugar, monk fruit or dates in your cooking instead of white sugar.

Take these secrets and run with them. These tips, along with an effective and consistent exercise program, are the formula for a toned, lean body.
