What is Pilates?

Pilates is a system of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates. Mr. Pilates developed a program he called “Contrology” that included the currently popular concept of holistic health and fitness, acknowledging the mind-body-spirit connection. His work iscomprehensive, vast and profound, including exercises done on the floor (mat work) and on special equipment that he designed and developed.

Pilates exercises were embraced first by the dance community, probably since Mr. Pilates’ studio was in New York City, and then by Physical Therapists, before reaching the fitness industry in the last 10 years. Joseph Pilates passed away in 1967, leaving a legacy of over 500 exercises and an exercise philosophy that would help millions of people.

Do I need Pilates?

Exercise programs in America over the last few years have addressed cardiovascular conditioning and muscular strengthening, which are essential components of fitness. Strengthening the torso or core of the body has amounted to a few abdominal exercises. Many people have lower back pain, weak abdominal (and other muscles), poor posture, and many don’t really know how to use their body effectively. This frequently results in injury, lack of use, and even more weakness. Even “fit” people and athletes can have a weak core and a lack of overall flexibility which can result in muscle imbalances, a decrease in flexibility and back pain.
